Another “fiery” weekend for the Trapani Coast Guard

An injured person rescued by the GC B167 pneumatic dinghy crew of the Local Maritime Office of Favignana, an owner of a beach equipment rental business and a bathing establishment concessionaire fined with administrative fines of €1,032 each and a group of tourists equally fined for lighting a fire on the beach.

Another “fire” budget from the Coast Guard of Trapani and the dependent maritime offices in the second week from the start of the control and surveillance operation on the coast, called “Mare Sicuro 2024”.

The first emergency last Friday 21 June, when the crew of the GC B167 pneumatic dinghy of the Maritime Office of Favignana intervened near the beach of the “Preveto” area, to pick up a tourist who had injured herself on the rocks from an inaccessible and inaccessible area from land, in the meantime she was rescued and stabilized on a stretcher by the medical staff of the Favignana 118 emergency health service, who however were unable to evacuate her to another safe place due to the danger of the area where the accident occurred.

The soldiers of the Coast Guard of Favignana, after having reached the beach by sea, also transporting the Doctor capable of providing more accurate care to the unfortunate victim, embarked her on the military vehicle and then transferred her to the water ambulance in service on the island which, precisely due to the shallow waters in front of the aforementioned location, she had not been able to get closer to better assist and collect the unfortunate woman.

On Saturday 21 June, however, during the checks on the coast of the Municipality of Trapani, the vehicle patrol of the Port Authority ascertained the positioning of beach equipment in non-compliance with the requirements contained in the specific authorization provision issued by the Territory and Environment Department of the Region Siciliana, immediately having the systems located near the sea shore removed but in the absence of customers who had rented them, imposing a fine of €1,032.00 on the owner of the business.

On Sunday morning, however, the land patrol of the Port Authority of Trapani, during the same number of checks in the Municipality of Custonaci, ascertained the opening of a bathing establishment in the absence of a lifeguard as well as the minimum and obligatory supplies and equipment to ensure the assistance and rescue service, such as skate, life jacket, fins, binoculars and diving mask, warning the owner to immediately close the Lido until the lifeguard service is restored, according to the requirements imposed by the current Bathing Safety Ordinance n. 20, issued by the Port Authority of Trapani on 11 June 2018 and notifying the aforementioned concessionaire of an administrative report of €1,032.00.

Finally, in the early afternoon of Sunday, the soldiers of the Local Maritime Office of Favignana sanctioned with a further administrative fine of €1,032.00 some yachtsmen who had landed on the islet of Preveto, who had unexpectedly set a fire on the beach, creating danger for swimmers and alerting the Police Forces present on the island of a presumed fire emergency.

Just 15 days after the start of the “Mare Sicuro” operation, there have already been many violations and rescue operations carried out by the Trapani Coast Guard which, once again, deems it appropriate to raise awareness among all tourists and swimmers to pay maximum attention before access to rocky or inaccessible places near the coast and the sea, checking and inquiring in advance, even through a simple phone call to the Harbor Office, to find out if they have been banned from entry and transit because they are considered dangerous for the public safety of people.

Furthermore, it is necessary to draw the attention of all concessionaires and owners of both bathing establishments and beach equipment rental businesses to the importance, in the first case of establishing the mandatory and preventive lifesaving and assistance service for bathers and, in the second case, to place umbrellas, deckchairs and sunbeds on the beach only after having concluded the rental contract with the relevant customers and patrons, so as not to violate the clear provisions contained in the authorization documents issued by the competent Sicilian Region, as the owner of the maritime state property of the island.
