VIAREGGIO. Work on the renovation of the Matilde Tower is progressing rapidly and, by the summer, it will be reopened to the public and will host the city’s first multimedia museum. Yesterday morning, inspection – to verify the progress of the intervention – by the mayor Giorgio del Ghingaro, accompanied by the councilor for culture, Sandra Mei, in the presence of Marcello Bertocchini, president of the Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca Foundation which entirely financed the jobs. A commitment of over 750 thousand euros for the Foundation chaired by Bertocchini.

The first phase is almost complete, which saw the creation of a helical staircase, made entirely of galvanized and painted steel in place of the existing one, which will allow access to the upper floors up to the terrace from which you can enjoy the panorama of Viareggio.

«The Matilde Tower is our oldest monument», declared the mayor: «The one that preserves the history of Viareggio and which has always watched over the city. Restoring it, rethinking its function, making it accessible and accessible on every floor has been one of the most exciting projects of this administration. And we are proud to have now reached the end of the work.”

An important investment, confirmed president Marcello Bertocchini, «but which we believe is well used. Visiting the interior, with that staircase, the vaults on the walls, the three floors and the access to the terrace, the work done makes this place full of charm which is much more than a monument, but the symbol of birth and history of this city. So we felt it was more than our duty to finance them.”

The next step is the setting up of the museum by Navigo, with the most advanced multimedia technologies whose contents are curated by Maurizio Vanni, for a journey that will guide visitors through the history of Viareggio, from its birth to the present day. In the next few days a film will be shot that will be part of this project: two actresses will play Paolina Bonaparte and Maria Luisa Borbone who, on the original fishing boat by Maestro Giacomo Puccini, recently renovated, will take a cruise from the lake to the sea, telling the story of these places. The museum will respect all internal spaces and images will be projected on the walls.

«It will be a virtual museum», specified councilor Mei, «divided by floors. On the ground floor we will find Pauline Bonaparte and Marie Louise of Bourbon, who will illustrate the story. On the second floor there will be today’s Viareggio with its events and its excellence from the Carnival, to the Pucciniano, to the Repaci Prize. The top floor will be dedicated to sailing in Viareggio: from the construction of the first ships to the mega yachts of today. Finally, you will go out onto the terrace from where you can admire all of Viareggio.”
