How much is promotion to Serie A worth? The figures
A post season which, as mentioned, puts the last place in the league up for grabs Serie A 2024/25 who at that point will know all 20 teams that will participate in the next championship. But how much is winning the playoffs and the consequent conquest of a place in the top flight of Italian football worth? Here are all the estimates of Football and Financebased on Serie A revenues for 2023/24,
Starting from Melandri Law which regulates the quotas of TV rights to be divided among the clubs of the top flight:
- a share equal to 50% is divided equally among all the clubs participating in the Serie A championship;
- a share equal to 15% based on the ranking and points achieved in the last championship;
- a share of 10%, based on the results achieved in the last five championships;
- a share equal to 5%, based on the ranking formed taking into account the sporting results achieved at national and international level from the 1946/47 Sports Season to the sixth prior to the reference season;
- a share of 8%, based on the television audience certified by Auditel;
- a share equal to 12%, based on paying spectators who purchased access tickets to watch the home matches played in the last three championships.
On the basis of these figures, it is therefore possible to estimate how much the promotion to Serie A is worth in terms of revenues from TV rights: as a minimum figure, it is in fact around 26 million eurosconsidering the part distributed equally between the clubs and the minimum quotas referring to the other rankings.
Without forgetting the issue of parachute in case of relegation for the following season, which can be valid as a minimum of 10 million (in the case of a newly promoted team that immediately returns to Serie B) up to one maximum of 25 million (for those who are relegated after having played in the top division for three seasons, even non-consecutive in the last four).
