Some “opacities” still remain in the water of Mazara

The serious situation of nitrate pollution continues in some of the waters distributed in the City. Not throughout the city but, at least in the areas that are supplied from the sampling points in via Ugo La Malfa and Lungomare Fata Morgana (Tonnarella), the nitrates are above the limit, respectively at 55 mg/litre for the former and even 88 mg./liter for the second. We remind you that the legal maximum limit is 50 mg. per liter.

THE SAMPLES COLLECTED IN VIA UGO LA MALFA AND LUNGOMARE FATA MORGANA ARE OUT OF STANDARDS – The Municipality itself made this known in recent days through its institutional website. The overrun, albeit minimal, should lead the municipal administration to issue the consequential acts required by law. Already in the past, in similar cases, the municipal administration had issued a union order of non-potability (n. 119 of 11/23/2020), due to excessive nitrate concentration (value higher than the threshold value of 50 mg/l foreseen by Legislative Decree 31/2001). To date, however, nothing appears to have been communicated in this regard.

COCRIAM’S QUESTIONS TO MAYOR QUINCI – “Reading the analyzes published on the official website – declares Giuliano Messina of the CoCRIAM ‘Citizen Committee for the protection of the territory’s water and environmental resources’ – it is noted that the sample taken in the Via Ugo la Malfa stream (water distributed in the EAST area of Mazara) has a nitrate concentration of 52 mg/l, (see test report no. 2657 dated 05-07-2024) which is higher than the threshold value established by law (50 mg/l – Legislative Decree . n. 18 of 23-02-2023), therefore, the question that the citizen asks himself is: does the water that reaches the taps of the users residing in the eastern area of Mazara del Vallo have the characteristics to be intended for drinking purposes? or not? It seems paradoxical – concludes Messina – that
a municipal administration as managing body of the drinking water service, leaves the interpretation of the results of the analyzes on the water distributed to city users up to individual citizens”. “We have passed – adds Silvana Mannone, president of CoCRIAM, on their social channel – 200 days! With today, for 201 times we ask the administration to answer a question: is the water supplied to the inhabitants of the eastern area of the city drinkable?
Because, if it is not drinkable, as the analyzes show, citizens must be informed because their health is at risk.”

THE GHOST DENITRIFIER – “As regards the denitrifier – the then councilor for Public Works, Vito Torrente, who resigned a few months ago, informed Tp24.it at the end of September 2023 – the tender has been completed, next week we will make the assignment report for the start of work ”. What happened to the plant which, according to the Municipality’s plans, should have had a significant impact on the problem? More than seven months have passed and, having said goodbye to Torrente, there has been no further update on the denitrifier. We invite the Quinci administration to respond when they wish.

THE OTHER ANALYZES – The results of the complete water analyzes – with detailed and transparent information on the state of their quality are ‘updated’ (we would say ‘in fits and starts’, given that the previous results date back to November 2023) as of 7 May 2024 –
and you can read them below.
