SIENA. Today, 1 June 2024, at 10.00 am, in the presence of the prefect, the mayor, the president of the Province, the provincial leaders of the police force, as well as a representation of the Siena Carabinieri and the National Carabinieri Association, a mass – officiated by Cardinal Augusto Paolo Lojudice and the Military Chaplain of the Tuscan Carabinieri Legion – in the Church of San Girolamo in Campansi, to commemorate the two Carabinieri killed, 34 years ago, in the heart of the city. Subsequently, two laurel wreaths were placed at the site of the massacre. The families of the two fallen also participated in the ceremony, accompanied by the Provincial Commander of the Carabinieri of Siena.
During the ceremony, those present were reminded of the tragic event of 1 June 1990, when the crew of the Aliquota Radiomobile of the Siena Carabinieri Company, composed of the Carabinieri Mario FORZIERO and Nicola CAMPANILE, were subjected to gunfire gun, during a check, by an unknown person who had been noticed on board a moped. Both Carabinieri, transported to the Polyclinic of Siena, died from the serious injuries sustained, while the perpetrator of the heinous crime, who initially managed to escape on foot into the historic city centre, was blocked by the other police forces, who rushed to the aid of the Army soldiers.
On 21 December 1990, by decree of the President of the Republic, the Carabinieri Mario FORZIERO and Nicola CAMPANILE were granted the Gold Medal of Civil Valor in memory, the highest reward to reward acts of exceptional courage which demonstrate evident civic virtue, with the motivation given below:
“Self-mounted patrol members while preparing to identify the driver of a motorcycle were subjected to sudden fire. Although seriously injured, they tried to react with the weapon provided but, in a desperate attempt to chase the criminal, they collapsed to the ground. Splendid example of young lives sacrificed with great courage and a very high sense of duty.”
