Viterbo – “Photovoltaic, the projects authorized by the Lazio region in the province of Viterbo risk losing 50% of agricultural land”. The head of the Fai Cisl Lazio union, Claudio Tomarelli, raised the alarm.

“However, the government’s provision regulating photovoltaics on agricultural land is positive news – continues Tomarelli. As Fai Lazio we have always expressed criticism towards this type of energy policy, which benefits large financial groups to the detriment of quality agricultural production and work. However, it is essential to ensure full compatibility between the protection of our agricultural production and solar energy. We are against land consumption and want to safeguard the territory, our landscape and our food supply chains.”

“The Lazio region – adds the FAI regent – has authorized projects for new photovoltaic systems, only in the province of Viterbo, if built, photovoltaic systems would lead to a loss of approximately 50% of agricultural land, out of the already 70 thousand hectares of consumption of soil at a national level. As Fai Cisl of Lazio we are not against the installation of solar energy systems, but only if they are installed on the roofs of stables, on sheds, in greenhouses and on agricultural appliances without taking away arable land from our farmers. The installation of ground panels consumes productive agricultural land to the detriment of our regional excellence and the employment that the sector generates.”

Tomarelli also provides some data on land consumption. “Land consumption in Lazio is high – he underlines – and Viterbo, according to Ispra data, ranks fifth in Italy for solar energy production and first place in Lazio. This use of solar panels and wind farms is a problem both for the strong agricultural and agri-food vocation of our region and for the heritage of traditions of which the agricultural companies and workers are custodians.

“We must absolutely prevent – concludes Claudio Tomarelli – the questioning of an agricultural area where serious, innovative and courageous entrepreneurs invest in human capital, green policies, start-ups and organic farming. We have a duty to protect our natural and environmental reserves, fundamental for biodiversity with breathtaking landscapes and important cultural assets. From the Etruscans to the Renaissance passing through the Middle Ages. A priceless heritage that must be safeguarded, protected and defended. Because there is no food without land, just as there is no quality work. And without food, land and quality there is no future.”
