The Valle dei Templi Archaeological and Landscape Park of Agrigento presents and opens registrations for the second training course entitled “Strategies for the conservation and valorization of agricultural biodiversity”, organized as part of the Demetra Project.

The initiative brings together a prestigious teaching body and will see the opening day, May 29th at 9.00 am at Casa Sanfilippo, after the greetings of the Park Director, Roberto Sciarratta, and the Director of Service 7 – Regional Department of Agriculture , of Rural Development and Mediterranean Fisheries, Salvatore Accardi, the interventions, among others, of Prof. Paolo Inglese, of the University of Palermo and of Lieutenant Colonel Vincenzo Castronovo, Commander of the Natura Anti-Crime Center of the Carabinieri of Agrigento.

The course is aimed at qualified professionals in the agricultural and forestry sector, with a maximum of 25 participants. The meetings will take place at the Archaeological and Landscape Park of the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento and in other locations identified by the teachers and includes theoretical and practical lessons for a total of 60 hours, divided into three modules of 20 hours each. The practical activities will take place in experimental fields and private companies in the regional territory. Participation is free and includes breakfasts for lunch breaks and bus travel to the experimental fields for practical training. At the end of each course, those enrolled who meet the minimum curricular requirements, upon completion of 20 hours of classroom training, will be awarded 3 post-graduate CFU (university training credits) and CFP (professional training credits). Auditors will receive a certificate of participation, but will not be awarded professional training credits.

The Demetra Project also aims to train a group of specialists in the field of Mediterranean cultivated biodiversity among the regional officials of the departments responsible for safeguarding and promoting the landscape heritage. These experts will be fundamental in coordinating actions aimed at countering the risk of extinction and erosion of Mediterranean cultivated biodiversity. The coordinator of the Project is Calogero Alaimo Di Loro (Agronomist Parco Valle dei Templi), while the scientific director is Paolo Inglese (Full Professor of Agricultural Sciences UniPa).

The course was created in collaboration with the University of Palermo, with the patronage of ODAF Agrigento and the Regional Federation of Agronomists and Forestry Doctors. Funded by the Regional Department of Agriculture within the PSR Sicily 2014/20, Measure 10.2a and 4.4a, the Demetra Project aims to explore the theme of biodiversity cultivated in the Mediterranean context.

The teachers of the course will be: Prof. Paolo Inglese (UNIPA), Lieutenant Colonel Vincenzo Castronovo (Commander of the Natura Carabinieri anti-crime center of Agrigento), Petra Engel (CREA – Council for research in agriculture and the analysis of agricultural economics), Giuseppe Di Noto (Agronomist – expert on agro-biodiversity issues), Ignazio Di Gangi (Manager of the Nebrodi Park), Giuseppe Panarelli (Grafter, pruner), Giuseppe Russo (President of the Gian Pietro Ballatore Research Consortium), Paolo Manzullo (Agronomist of the Manzullo Bio Company), Stefano La Malfa (UniCT Teacher), Salvatore Mongiovì (Architect), Vincenzo Montalbano (MASAF Official), Alfio Spina (CREA – Council for agricultural research and analysis of agricultural economics), Sebastiano Blangiforti (Experimental Consortium Station of Grain Growing for Sicily), Rosario Bono (Collection Manager of the Experimental Company Campo Carboj – ESA), Filippo Marchese (Francesco Monastra Foundation), Vittorio Li Puma (Petraviva Madonie Cooperative), Filippo Parrino (President of Legacoop Sicilia), Roberto Butera (Madre Terra Cooperative) .
