Metropolitan Bologna – The European Night of Museums returns to Bologna and the metropolitan city

A rich calendar of special initiatives and evening openings is scheduled for Saturday 18 May

The museums of Bologna and of Metropolitan city join the 20th edition of European Night of Museums scheduled Saturday 18 May 2024.

After the positive experience experienced in 2023, the Bologna area confirms participation in the event with one planning it’s a shared communication Between capital city And 17 municipalities of the metropolitan area, 3 more than last year, activating a synergistic network that brings together the entire cultural offer with a view to strengthening the coordinated and integrated museum system in its various branches.

The activities proposed by the Civic Museums of Bologna are also part of the preview of the second edition of Bologna Portici Festivalscheduled for May 17 and 18, 2024.

Conceived in 2005 by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication and since 2011 extended to the entire European community – with the patronage of UNESCO, the Council of Europe and ICOM -, the European Night of Museums promotes knowledge of national and European cultural heritage and identity by inviting museums to open their doors beyond ordinary opening hours, with free entry or to symbolic cost of 1 euro. Across Europe, almost 3,400 museums will welcome the public at night, simultaneously offering a special program to invite visitors to discover or rediscover their collections from a new perspective, through a more creative and sensorial approach.

On the same day, Saturday 18 May, the International Museum Day (International Museum Day – IMD) established in 1977 by ICOM, the main international network of museums and museum professionals. The coordinated planning of activities will also continue to celebrate this important anniversary, which intends to highlight the importance of the role of museums as institutions at the service of society and its development. The theme chosen for the 2024 edition is “Museums for Education and Research”, in reference to two specific Sustainable Development Goals of the 2023 Agenda promoted by the United Nations. Goal 4 – Quality Education – aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. Goal 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure – is aimed at building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization and fostering innovation.
