From Wednesday 15 May the underground route of the Theater of the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum reopens to the public. Visitors will be able to transform themselves into real explorers with helmets, capes and torches, to discover the history of the ancient city. Bi-weekly appointment for tourists united in groups of 12 people, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, until November 9th with 6 shifts, with an interruption in the months of July and August.

It is a real journey through time through the eighteenth-century tunnels accompanied by Park staff as part of the valorization project with opening of the underground visit route to the public and inclusion actions of the Via Mare neighborhood.

The cyclical reopening of the Theater – declares the Director of the Sirano Park – represents for the entire Vesuvian area the possibility of a journey through history, it is from here that everything started, since the theater was accidentally discovered and the investigations that led to the discovery of Herculaneum and Pompeii were started. An experience to be recommended to every visitor passionate about culture and history with an exciting journey which transports us back through the centuries and makes us protagonists of a discovery that is renewed every time before our amazed eyes. But the theater is also located in the heart of the historic center of Ercolano and can easily become a stop to discover the other beauties and points of interest of the modern city, starting from the famous and colorful Pugliano market and the Virtual Archaeological Museum, and a few hundreds of meters away the Villa Campolieto and the Royal Palace of Portici.”.

The visits will take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 09.30, 10.30, 11.30, 14.30, 15.30, 16.30, (shifts in English at 11.30 and 16.30). Tickets can be purchased online on the site www.ercolano.coopculture.it and directly at the Park ticket office.

TICKETS:

  • entrance to the ancient theater of Herculaneum: €5.00.
  • integrated entrance to the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum + Ancient Theater of Herculaneum: €15.00.
  • -Reduced ticket provided only for the theater-only ticket of €2.00 for children aged between 18 and 25.

All free admissions are suspended with the exception of those relating to disabled people and their family members or other companions who demonstrate their belonging to social and health care services.

INFORMATION FOR VISIT TO THE ANCIENT THEATER:

  • The route is underground and reaches approximately 25 meters from road level.
  • The visit is reserved for adults.
  • The appointment is at the Archaeological Park ticket office 30 minutes before the start of your visit.
  • The flooring is wet in several places and is slippery due to the presence of limestone sedimentation and water. Furthermore, the route includes many steps. Therefore, it is not suitable for claustrophobic subjects and people with walking problems or pregnant people, or with pathologies that can be influenced by the context of the visit.
  • For safety reasons, visitors are asked to bring only small bags with them.
  • Helmets, hair caps, capes and torches to be used along the route will be provided by the Archaeological Park of Ercolano.
  • The use of closed, low, resistant and waterproof shoes is mandatory. it is preferable to use trekking shoes.
  • In summer it is advisable to bring comfortable sweaters or jackets to wear before the visit, given the considerable temperature changes to be faced during the journey
