Football sometimes writes incredible stories. Like the fairy tale of Cesena, who returned to Serie B after beating Pescara a few Sundays ago. The Bianconeri Cavalluccio, led by helmsman Mimmo Toscano, shifted into fourth gear and made a gap behind it, leading the second in the standings by 17 points: Torres. The promotion of the Bianconeri from Romagna arrived four rounds early. Yet, Cesena experienced the bitter days of bankruptcy, caused by a financial abyss that threw the city and the fans into despair, accustomed in the past to enjoying a very different type of stage at the “Manuzzi”. Cesena, in fact, in its glorious history, boasts 13 participations in the top Serie A championship. The generous Romagna could not watch that corporate failure impassively. Thus, around thirty local entrepreneurs did not give up. By deciding to join together, through shares divided into equal parts, they resurrected Cesena from the ashes. The revival operations were directed by the entrepreneur Augusto Patrignani with the supervision of the founder of Orogel, Bruno Piraccini. The entry of the current American owners into the club, John Aiello and Robert Lewis, completed the work of corporate rebirth. By making courageous investments, associated with strategic marketing operations, the American owners managed to bring Cesena back to the Lega Pro in the space of just one season and, in the following seasons, the club even reached the playoffs. It happened last season, 2022-23, when against Lecco, surprisingly, the Cavalluccio team was eliminated by the Lombard Biancocelesti, who in turn, in a very heated double final played against Foggia, managed to regain the cadet series exactly after half a century. In this superlative season not yet concluded, Mimmo Toscano and John Aiello’s Cesena made practically nothing wrong. An impressive journey. 25 wins, 2 losses and 5 draws. 74 goals scored so far and only 18 conceded. A steamroller. The team of Toscano and Aiello leveraged the youth of the nursery. Pieraccioni, Francesconi, Shpendi, Berti, Giovannini. The philosophy of enhancing the talents of the youth sector has always been a priority prerogative of the Romagna club. Cesena’s championship, despite winning Serie B, is not over yet. The Romagna team, 89 points in the standings, will try to snatch the absolute record of points scored in a Serie C championship from Catanzaro. The Calabrian team scored 93 points in the 2022-23 season. A record that today only Cesena can pulverize.
