“Production in a short time”this is the promise of the Capitoline administration, which to give the city of Rome a space dedicated to story of the planning and urban transformation of the city and its metropolitan area, had announced a design competition in the last days of last year.

Not a new building, but an existing space of great historical value, on Viale Manzoni, within the complex designed by Marcello Piacentini, winner of the design competition in 1920.

The focuses on architecture, archaeology, mobility and environment will find space in the new project-exhibition signed by Matrice Studiothe grouping composed of Lorenzo Maggio, Margherita Di Micco, Constantine Diana, Joseph Diana, Giuseppe Parisi And Raffaele Semonella.

The future Metropolitan Urban Center will occupy an area of approximately 1075 m2 distributed over 4 floors, with reception and information desks, meeting rooms, conferences, projections and shows, but also classrooms, laboratories and an interactive multimedia space. The outdoor space of 462 m2also to be rethought as a multipurpose and modular area, will be a place for meetings, debates, conferences and exhibitions en plein airencouraging intergenerational meetings.

The jury – chaired by Daniela Santarelli and composed of architects Cristina Calì, Massimo Piacenza, Alessandra Centroni And Maria Rita Schirru – awarded the proposal of Matrice Architetti “both for the articulation of the individual evaluation criteria and for the setting of the project, with a good offer in terms of innovative, technical and ecological qualities”.

Furthermore, the flexibility of use of the exhibition system and the design attention to the needs of disabled people were appreciated, especially from the point of view of multimedia accessibility, “thought of as a design opportunity and not as a constraint”.

Not least the environmental themes developed with coherence, in particular from the vegetation aspect of the garden.

Motivation of the jury

The design proposal returns a good correspondence to the general criteria contained in the DIP, the characterization of the spaces is linked to the modularity of the spaces; functional program well studied and very flexible to the different distributions of spaces and multimedia aspects; the attention to multimedia accessibility for the disabled is appreciable; interesting common thread of the setup between inside and outside, even if the equipped outdoor space could be lightened up somewhat.

Motivation of the jury

Project proposal that overall meets the requirements of the DIP but with doubts about the actual feasibility of the project. Innovative proposal in terms of communication of the contents of the Urban Center. The purple ribbon is a significant element in the internal/external connection. The spaces are well organized and above all modular. The idea of the garden of sustainable ideas is good.
