Acerbo – Camposampiero (ptd): it is not a crime to criticize born. carabinieri at a town house in La Spezia

Published May 5, 2024

“In La Spezia the carabinieri visited and identified a town that hung a banner against the presence of NATO in the city in the window. There is strong opposition to the expansion of the military base in the city and the citizen’s protest is absolutely legitimate. This is an unacceptable act of intimidation given that criticizing or being against NATO is not yet a crime. This episode confirms that we were right to present the PACE TERRA DIGNITÀ list with Michele Santoro and Raniero La Valle because the warmongering drift is everywhere a threat to democracy. Our applause goes to this town that repudiates the war and, specifically, contests the militarization of its city.”, declare Maurizio Acerbo, national secretary of Rifondazione Comunista and Anna Camposampiero, of the executive of the European Left, candidates for the European elections with the list PEACE EARTH DIGNITY.

The statement from the Provincial Secretariat of Rifondazione Comunista La Spezia:

Is hanging a banner against NATO a crime? Let’s all hang it up

In recent days a town in La Spezia has hung a banner bearing the words “NATO out of Spezia”, a small but significant gesture to say yes to peace, no to war and to denounce, if there was still any need, that our city produces weapons that then they are exported to massacre civilians on the various war fronts.

In response, she received a visit to her home from the Carabinieri who identified her.

In expressing solidarity with the citizen we remind those who are forgetful that in our city with a law decree the naval base of our city will be adapted to NATO standards (the famous Blue Bases project) with public expenditure (our money) of over 300 million euros.

It is an affront that military spending continues to increase while the defunding of healthcare continues.

It is shameless for money to be spent on military expenses while hospitals and schools are closed.

Meanwhile from the balconies, Marola expresses his protest. Banners contesting the useless and harmful expansion project of the naval base, demanding reclamation and reacquisition of unused spaces. Will these voices still go unheard? We want to express solidarity with the Marolina population and invite the whole city to expose a voice of dissent from their windows: no blue bases.
