VICENZA – On the day of departure of the 107th Tour of Italy cycling mourns Imerio Massignan, ‘the angel of Gavia’, died this morning, May 4, at the age of 87 after hospitalization in Novi Ligure (Alessandria). Originally from Valmarana (Vicenza), he had been living in Silvano d’Orba for some time. Massignan earned his nickname when, on the twentieth stage of the 1960 Giro, he was the first rider to pass over the Gavia, a pass between the provinces of Brescia and Sondrio that had never previously been touched by the Corsa Rosa and which proved very difficult to tackle both in uphill and downhill. «He was a humble hero – recalls the mayor of Silvano d’Orba, Giuseppe Coco – who knew how to face life with his head held high, despite the fact that his riches never touched him. He never ran for money, but to show off his qualities, especially moral ones.” Once his competitive activity stopped, he worked as a pavement installer, but always made some time for cycling. «He was able to adapt to every situation in life, becoming a great reference of ethics and morality for our entire community», adds Coco. After the death of his wife, Bice, he lived in the village with his son Raffaello. He also leaves behind his daughter Alessia, a brother and a sister. The funeral will be celebrated on Tuesday 7 May in the parish church of Silvano.
