The Municipality of Messina is also joining the National Reading Campaign this year “May of Books 2024” conceived by Cepell
(Centre for Books and Reading) and has now reached its fourteenth edition. Messina thus underlines the social value of books and reading.
This year’s theme is “If you read you will free yourself” and it has three strands: Lib(e)rs of knowledge (presentations, essays, cultural activities); –
Lib(e)ri di dreame (children’s reading, novels and fiction in all its facets); – Free to create (workshops, activities
recreational activities, events dedicated to poetry).
The social value of books in Messina
In agreement with the mayor Federico BasileL’Department of Cultural Policies of the Municipalitytogether with the City Culture service
Metropolitana has drawn up a calendar of events involving associations, bookshops, publishers, schools, libraries and private bodies,
to underline and reinforce the social value of books and reading as a key element of personal, cultural and
social of a community.
The program started last year April 23 on the occasion of Book Festival, with meetings at the municipal library, and at the Mondadori Bookstore and Doralice and will see the alternation of initiatives for adults and children until 31 May 2024, with the aim of introducing them to reading. The events will take place in bookstores and libraries, but also in the “non-places” of the book, i.e. in squares, stairways, trams and ships.
Readings on the go
A peculiarity of this calendar of events are the “Readings on the move” edited by “givers of voice” which they will read on the tram and on the Caronte & Tourist ships. The readings will take place like this:
- Readings on TRAM Tuesday 7, 14, 21, 28 May from 4pm to 6pm;
- Readings on the Caronte&Tourist ships on Thursday 9, 16, 23 and 30 May from 4pm to 6pm.
Friday May 10th It will take place from 6.30pm to 10.30pm the Night of Books and Librarieswith the involvement of the “Giacomo Longo” regional library, the Library of the Capuchin Friars Minor, the municipal library and the city’s bookshops which will guarantee evening openings and initiatives within their spaces.
