Saturday 18 May at 9.10pm Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania and Classica HD present an exclusive premiere of the diptych La Lupa and Il berretto a sonagli, the latter title commissioned by the Etna opera company and staged as a world premiere. The focus is on the operatic transposition of authentic cornerstones of literature, set to music by Marco Tutino, who with his librettists was freely inspired by the pages of Giovanni Verga and Luigi Pirandello, great Sicilian writers, universally celebrated in the Olympus of Fine Letters.

The backstage documentary, shot by director Francesco Fei behind the scenes of the Teatro Massimo Bellini, tells the story of the dual staging on the Catania stage. The rejection of mafia silence, the courage to report, the fight against abuse and gender inequality, these are the messages conveyed.

Il beretto a rattles, performed in its world premiere at the Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania, is the operatic version freely taken from Luigi Pirandello’s masterpiece. The absolute novelty, strongly desired by the Superintendent Giovanni Cultrera of Montesano and the artistic director Fabrizio Maria Carminati, was commissioned by the Teatro Massimo Bellini of Catania to Marco Tutino, one of the most prestigious composers in the world, who made use of Fabio’s libretto Ceresa, renowned writer and director. The unpublished score is combined with another operatic title by Tutino, La Lupa, taken from the novella by Giovanni Verga, an act in two scenes, with verses by Giuseppe Di Leva.

The director Fabrizio Maria Carminati leads the Bellini Theater Orchestra; the direction is by Davide Livermore, who also signs the scenes together with Eleonora Peronetti, D-Wok projections, costumes by Mariana Fracasso, lights by Gaetano La Mela. And a cast of excellence: in the main roles of The Rattle Cap the soprano Irina Lungu (Beatrice Fiorica) and the baritone Alberto Gazale (Ciampa). And then, Nina Surguladze (Assunta La Bella), Sergio Escobar (Fifì), Anna Pennisi (Fana), Rocco Cavalluzzi (Spanò). The part of the Lupa is instead entrusted to Laura Verrecchia and, alongside her, Rosario La Spina in the role of Nanni Lasca. And again, Valentina Bilancione (Mara), Giuliana Distefano (Gloria), Mariam Baratashvili (Lia), Vittorio Vitelli (Marshal), Pietro Picone (Pino), Marco Puggioni (Nicola), Enrico Marrucci (Salvatore).
The operation achieved considerable success with the public, with every performance sold out and with great media coverage, collecting excellent reviews in the main national newspapers and in all specialized magazines.

The Backstage of Marco Tutino’s diptych and La Lupa e Il beretto a sonagli will be broadcast for the first time on Classica HD on Saturday 18 May at 9.10 pm, and in repeat on 20, 22, 26, 28 May and 6, 14 June , at times to be defined.
