Catania – It took them forty seconds to steal a car. And they also thought they had gotten away with it, the two from Catania who were identified and reported for aggravated theft in competition. The two were identified by the Carabinieri of the Piazza Dante station thanks to the analysis of the video surveillance. Two thefts were the subject of the investigation and both were near Corso Sicilia. The two, a 40-year-old and a 51-year-old, both from Catania and already known to the police, had stolen a Lancia Y, parked in via Luigi Rizzo, on 25 January, and the following day a Fiat Panda, parked along via Domenico Cimarosa.

The turning point in the investigations following the complaints was the images acquired by the security cameras installed in the area but also the traditional investigations. For the theft of the Lancia Y, the images revealed how the two men, in the morning, had arrived aboard a Fiat Punto, owned by the 40-year-old, who was driving the small car and had parked it in via Gian Battista Caramba. At this point both criminals, certain of not being seen, got out of the vehicle and divided the tasks: the 51-year-old continued along Via Rizzo towards a Lancia Y, managing to force the door, enter the passenger compartment, start the engine and then move away in the direction of Via Ventimiglia while the 40-year-old, during the quick phases of the theft, acted as a “lookout” checking that no one was coming, walking, pretending nothing had happened but with a cautious attitude, near the car to be stolen. The next day, similarly, in the early afternoon the cameras in the area immortalized the transit of the same Fiat Punto along Via Domenico Cimarosa.

Shortly afterwards the two accomplices reappeared on the monitors while they were walking along the same road towards Largo Paisiello. This time too, the 51-year-old was walking on the left side on the sidewalk while the 40-year-old, almost invading the roadway, was walking on the right side. The larger of the two, covered by his “lookout” accomplice, after having reached a Fiat Panda and carefully examined it, entered the passenger compartment, started the engine and disappeared in the direction of Via Tomaselli.
