ROME – An “artifact from the Roman age”, whose presence “it does not appear to be in the records” already deposited, was discovered in the area of Pietralata where the Roma stadium should be built. For this reason, the Special Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Rome, as reported in the news broadcast by Radio Roma Sound, has written to the Giallorossi club, the Municipality and all interested parties, including the Carabinieri Cultural Heritage Protection Unit, to ensure that this happens “an urgent need to secure the area” and an inspection of the area is agreed with the technicians in charge of the archaeological activities of Roma Calcio. In the letter from the Special Superintendence we read that the artefact has a hydraulic function, with a plastered tunnel connected to a well and that it is close to the castellum aquae and the Roman cistern already identified in investigations in the 1990s.

The report – including photographic documentation – was sent to the Special Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Rome by Pietralata Mountains Popular Committee. The building would be located in an area external to the one where the pitch and stands of the actual stadium should be located, an area immediately outside and in any case affected by the project. The first urgency is that of ensuring safety. At the moment, fake nets appear to have been placed around the tunnel by unknown persons to prevent people from falling inside.
