Homeless man set on fire, policemen attacked: what’s happening in Anzio?

The recent episode of violence faced by the policemen of the Anzio police station, engaged in an arrest near the Lavinio station, has highlighted the serious critical issues in the management of public safety. The Italian Unitary Union of Police Workers Provincial Secretariat Siulp Rome returns to shine the spotlight on the Anzio problem.

«During the operation – explains Siulp – the crew was surrounded by over 30 non-EU citizens who attempted to disarm the policemen, attack the officers, free the arrested person and seriously damage the service car».

«This situation has highlighted not only the security issues that officers regularly have to deal with, but also the inadequacy of the logistical response. In fact, when the Anzio police station is in danger, it is necessary to wait up to half an hour for a support crew to arrive from the Castelli Romani, a delay that compromises the safety of both officers and citizens.”

SIULP has repeatedly raised these issues, calling for urgent interventions to improve the distribution of resources and reaction times.

Senator Silvestroni’s recent parliamentary question brought these issues to the attention of the competent authorities. In the meantime, while waiting for concrete and adequate responses, police officers continue to risk their lives every day due to an inadequate response to the obvious problems of public order and safety.

«It is essential to intervene with rapid and effective solutions to ensure that agents can operate in a safe and adequately supported environment. As summer approaches, it is urgent to act promptly to prevent situations that are difficult to contain in this period from becoming unsustainable and ineffective in the warmer months, when the influx of tourists could further aggravate the situation”, he concludes.

Homeless man set on fire

The police are trying to identify whoever set fire to a homeless man who was sleeping in a makeshift bed at the Padiglione train station in Anzio. The man, a 42-year-old Indian, suffered burns to his chest and legs, but his life is not in danger.

The victim said he was attacked between 9 and 10 am, while he was sleeping near the Pavilion station. A group of people, who then fled, poured the flammable liquid on him and then set him on fire.

He himself, in shock, took a train to get away from the scene of the attack and, getting off at Villa Claudia, asked passers-by for help. Investigators are examining camera images to accurately reconstruct what happened and identify the culprits.
