Bari, Decaro’s last speech to the Council: “Beautiful journey”

“Yesterday I made my last speech as mayor to the city council. I want to thank all the councilors for the wonderful journey we have done together over these years. Allow me to send a special thank you to the minority councillors, the final farewell is the tangible sign of the great institutional, mutual respect that has always existed in recent years. Although we have almost always been on different positions, we have the most important thing in common: our love for this city.” The mayor of Bari, Antonio Decaro, wrote it on social media, sharing the video of a fragment in his last speech as mayor of the city.

“These years have taught me to listen and look in the face of adversaries who remain and will always remain adversaries, never enemies. I have always sought mediation in this City Council, looking for what could unite and not divide because it is not true that reason is always with the strongest. I know poets who move rivers with their thoughts and infinite sailors who know how to speak to the sky, a song by Vecchioni says so. I don’t know how to write poetry, not even songs, even if I sing sometimes, I don’t even know how to sing them. However, I have often turned to the sky to ask it to show me the right path as happens to sailors. I tried to hold the helm of this extraordinary journey by trying to steer the ship into a safe sea. We sailed the sea in good and bad weather. Today I want to say that it was a beautiful journey, thanks especially to you,” he said finally turning to the councilors who greeted him with warm applause.
