PESCARA – A basic triage course aimed at nurses and doctors in the emergency discipline who work in the emergency room, aimed at providing adequate tools for the reception, evaluation and management of patients, according to the criteria of the new national guidelines.

The training initiative, in which over thirty doctors and nurses participated, was implemented by the Regional Health Agency (Asr), directed by Pierluigi Cosenza, and took place in Pescara, at the headquarters in via Attilio Monti, on Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd May, with the strategic objective, indicated by the Abruzzo Region, of improving standards at the four Emergency Urgency Units of the Abruzzo Local Health Authorities, standardizing the best practices of health workers.

“We are all committed, starting from the Region, from the local health authorities, from the councillor Nicoletta Verì and the president Marco Marsilio, in innovating to improve the service to users also through training – explains Dr. Cosenza -. And we started from a sector like the emergency room.”

The leader is the ASL of Teramo, with the Emergency Department, directed by Anna Rita Gabriele, head of the emergency room of the Mazzini hospital in Teramo.

“An excellent and profitable initiative – says director Gabriele – which will certainly be replicated. The strong point is that of having involved the professionals working in all four local health authorities, and this has allowed for an exchange and comparison of knowledge, methods and approaches, in the direction of standardizing the reception and care methods in all Abruzzo emergency rooms, in particular in the identification of care priorities and in the evaluation of the clinical condition of patients”.

The two days were divided between academic lectures and interactive group work. At the end of the second day, a collegial exercise session on clinical cases was held. The teachers Federico Podeschi, Roberto Panato, Edoardo Pennacchio, Samuele Giancarli and Loredana Finucci will hold the lessons.

The course addressed the following topics: the characteristics and skills of the triage expert, the objectives of the triage evaluation in the different phases, the evaluation of the vital parameters for triage, the meaning and function of the priority codes, the function and the fundamental characteristics of the triage sheet, the main implementation and evaluation strategies of a triage system, the main characteristics and requirements of protocols and decision diagrams for assigning the priority code, the principles of communication and relationship to triage, and also the psychological and legal aspects of triage activity.
