Negative quarter for Taranto and Brindisi: business growth declining in 2024 – Pugliapress

Vincenzo Cesareo

Unfortunately, business growth for Taranto and Brindisi in the first quarter of 2024 is negative: the Ionian province records a rate of -0.35%, that of Brindisi at -0.04%. Numbers that unite the two territories with the other provinces of the Region, with the sole exception of Lecce. These are the results of the quarterly release of Movimprese by Unioncamere – Infocamere, results that the President of the Brindisi – Taranto Chamber of Commerce, Vincenzo Cesareo, comments as follows: «It is undeniable that there is a growth problem that we must address without delay in both areas under the authority’s jurisdiction. This situation is caused both by the repercussions of the state of the national and global economy, as well as by the peculiar local crises that certainly affect the desire to start a business and the possibility of keeping it alive”.

The negative balances, respectively -181 units for Taranto and -14 for Brindisi, are determined by the difference between registrations (775 for Taranto; 604 for Brindisi) and non-official terminations (956 for Taranto; 618 for Brindisi) which occurred in the quarter. For both territories, the large traditional sectors, like a large part of the production sectors, show negative dynamics. In particular, for the province of Taranto, the worst balance is recorded by Commerce (-159 units), followed by Agriculture (-133) and Manufacturing activities (-34). Even in the province of Brindisi, the worst balance was achieved by trade (-92 units in the quarter), followed by the Agriculture sector (-64 units) and accommodation and catering services activities (-19 units). There are very few sectors that show small positive changes.

From an organizational point of view, the joint stock company form is the only one to present positive balances at a national, regional and local level. In Taranto, growth of +0.89% was recorded; in Brindisi the rate for this legal form is 1.27%. The results for partnerships and sole proprietorships were negative, while for the other forms, Taranto showed a negative growth rate (-0.36%), Brindisi positive (+0.18%).

«In any case, we must stop the bleeding that depletes the stock, while at the same time we contribute to injecting new life into this complex territorial system, deeply affected by crises, but extremely rich in potential and endowed with opportunities. As a Chamber of Commerce we are working precisely to develop programming to support the entrepreneurial fabric, just as we have started the institutional, local and national dialogues necessary to ensure the improvement of the context, also from the point of view of the attractiveness of the settlement » Cesareo concluded.
