LIVORNO. The cell burned down and a prison officer, who was trying to calm him down, ended up in hospital. Chaos on Wednesday 15 May at Sughere, with a Somali prisoner protagonist of the unrest. «We ask for his immediate removal from the Livorno prison – he explains Pierangelo Campolattano, Fns Cisl delegate – who suffers from chronic overcrowding to the limit of receptivity. The problems and critical issues of the Labronico prison are many and reported several times by this trade union organisation: the safety of the now undersized staff is put at risk on a daily basis. The failure of the prison administration is now evident, which with inappropriate choices is putting the work of the policemen to the test. Problematic prisoners who are not inclined to respect the rules continue to be assigned to Livorno as in other facilities in the district. On the part of the administration there is a clear lack of attention to the problems of the institute regarding its dilapidation and the serious shortage of staff. The prison staff have lost their peace of mind in working for some time now and despite multiple reports, they continue to assign problematic and psychiatric prisoners, which make it impossible to carry out a work shift without there being a critical event.”
