His act of selflessness and compassion proved that age is no barrier to making a difference in the lives of others. It is the one carried out by little Carolina, a 10-year-old girl from Salentowho together with his parents decided to donate his first communion gifts to the social ice cream shop “Defriscu” in Lecce, giving those in difficulty the joy of enjoying an ice cream during the hot spring and summer days. Thus demonstrating how a small act of kindness can have a significant impact on the lives of others. And, perhaps, lead by example.
The mother: «Welcome with smiles and enthusiasm»
«We were in Lecce for a walk – says Mrs. Annamaria, Carolina’s mother – when we stopped in this wonderful ice cream shop, in the center of Lecce, where these guys welcomed us with big smiles and great enthusiasm, telling us about their ice cream and their aspiration to continue this path. Stories we shared, enjoying an excellent ice cream.”
The daughter’s choice
Carolina chose to give up the gifts she would have received for the upcoming communion, celebrated on Sunday 14 April, donating that nest egg (also including the sums that the family would have spent on wedding favors) to support the philanthropic initiatives of the Salento Community Foundation and the Defriscu social ice cream shopwhere boys and girls with Down syndrome work, aspiring ice cream makers from the social promotion association “Possiamo”.
«At the beginning it was an early spring ice cream and nothing more – says the woman – but in the following days, talking about it with my daughter, who has always shown an altruistic, collaborative and generous attitude, we thought of this gesture of generosity: ” Mom, I have a lot and I don’t lack anything – were her words – I’m willing to give up something too.” And so it was: we only gave the guests the sugared almonds (in the photo), which my daughter personally packaged, donating to this beautiful project both the monetary gifts received from my daughter and the sum we would have spent on the wedding favors” .
Ice creams for the needy
Thanks to the donation of the little girl and her family, Coupons will be created to be distributed with the help of Caritas of Lecce to needy families in the city and allow them to enjoy homemade ice cream, for which it is unfortunately even considered a “luxury”. However, there are also other charitable initiatives planned. In a world often dominated by the rush to selfishness and materialism – instead in need of love and solidarity – Carolina demonstrates how even a small gesture of generosity can influence the lives of less fortunate people, helping to build a better world for everyone.
