Formignana Although the institutions, at all levels, have worked hard both from an operational point of view and on the information front, the result in the end is rather disheartening. Perhaps because part of the population is not yet “accustomed” – as happens in other countries – to the practice of bone marrow donation.
In fact, so far there have only been three people who have registered in the appropriate register for the donation of bone marrow (or marrow blood) to help a young man from Formignana suffering from a serious pathologyThis compares to 944 letters sent in recent days and addressed to all people (citizens) of the Municipality of Tresignana between 18 and 35 years old, for the campaign to raise awareness of bone marrow donation. Campaign which had as its reference the desire to help a young resident of Formignana, Corrado, suffering from a serious pathology.
A result that obviously leaves us disconcerted: despite the large conference dedicated to this campaign held in Formignana last month with Admo of Ferrara (Bone Marrow Donation Association) Ail Ferrara with the patronage of the Municipality, and despite the direct commitment of the mayor Laura Perelli, as well as of associations and volunteers, the result was not the best.
The procedure
From the beginning of April it is possible (until the end of the month) to undergo a saliva sample at the Avis office in Tresigallo (Piazza Italia) on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3.30pm to 6.30pm. The withdrawal must be carried out after completing a questionnaire, which must be printed and brought with you with all the information. Subsequently, analyzes are carried out which, at the end of the expected cycle, will determine the possible compatibility of the donor.
The reactions
In this sense, a new appeal comes to interested citizens. The appeal is from Sergio Sforza, president of Avis of Tresignana: «It is very sad – says Sforza – because so far only three people have joined this initiative, despite the over 900 letters sent by the Municipality to help this young man from Formignana. However, we hope that new members will arrive. I would also like to remind you that the sampling can also be carried out with simple saliva, not just blood.”
Even if there are no direct declarations, the Admo section of Ferrara itself hoped for a better success of the initiative. Hoping however that better numbers can still be achieved.
“You are the cure” is the important message of the letter sent to families which recalls the giant strides made by scientific research, while also recalling that up to now the only cure consists of a bone marrow transplant.
And only one person in 100 thousand is compatible with those waiting for a new life expectancy.
As we said, the initiative is open until the end of April, and therefore there is still time to go to the headquarters Avis of Tresigallo, where the necessary information can also be obtained. Initiative which has the support first and foremost of the municipal administration of Tresignana (first in the province), together with Admo Ferrara, Ail Ferrara, Avis Tresignana, Italian Red Cross, Pro Loco Formignana and Asd Faro Formignana. The objective is still to obtain good participation in the project, hope is the last thing to fail
