Candidate for mayor of Sassari, decisive hours for the center-left

Sassari. This morning should be the decisive hours for the “wide field”, called to choose the name of the candidate for mayor of Sassari for the same coalition that won the government of the Region last February 25th. The same parties that support President Alessandra Todde must decide for Palazzo Ducale. In reality, on paper the times may slip further. In fact, there is time up to 30 days before the vote to present the name of the candidate (or candidate) for mayor (with the lists of individual aspiring councilors to be filed promptly). In fact, as the Regional Council established last week in the installation session, we will vote on Saturday 8th (only in the afternoon) and Sunday 9th June, an election day that will bring together administrative and European elections.

However, there is no need to procrastinate any longer. In recent weeks the rumblings about possible candidates had started. but without quickly finding the square. The reason was obvious: the definition from the Todde Council was awaited. Having discarded the use of primaries (as is known, it is not a solution that suits everyone and the Democratic Party cannot impose it on allies who have always been less than enthusiastic), it was clear from the start that a decision had to be taken at the coalition table, but with the times of politics. Now the point is that, while the others, coalitions or movements, already have their own candidate for mayor, in the “wide field” everything is still silent, at least officially.

Giuseppe Mascia

The others? The positions, and the names, have been there for days, if not weeks. The center-right is focusing on the rector Gavino Mariotti (an important name but in his first direct involvement in politics, so it is a move not without unknowns), the Civics of the current (outgoing) majority in Palazzo Ducale on the expert councilor Nicola Lucchi, then the others who run alone, such as the Forzista Giuseppe Palopoli (Progetto Civico), Tore Piana, Manuel Pirino, while for Mariano Brianda the talks for an agreement with the center-left continue. In short, only the center-left box remains uncovered. So far, the attention of the media and social media has been reserved for all names from the Democratic Party. However, it is not at all obvious that the candidate (or candidate) for mayor will be expressed by the Democratic Party, but in fact it will be so in a regional framework which sees the renewal of the municipal administrations also of Cagliari (where the “wide field” is aiming for the return of Massimo Zedda: today the presentation press conference with the representatives of the entire coalition and the president Todde) and Alghero, only considering the municipalities with a possible double round (the vote would be on 23 June). There are then two names on which there is great attention: Giuseppe Mascia, municipal councilor and secretary of the federation, and Gianfranco Ganau, former mayor, former president of the regional council and former group leader also in the region. A former, it is repeated in recent days, “of political weight”, who, according to an always political logic, a part of the party would like to propose again as first citizen. On the other side there is Mascia, who would guarantee a renewal, not obviously brutal, because in the Democratic Party the time of “scrapping” was archived a long time ago (and the author of the expression, the former secretary Matteo Renzi, is migrated with mixed success to other party shores). But it would still be a renewal, without a doubt in terms of age (he is 49 years old). In recent weeks, other “sensitivities” had also emerged within the party, which roughly reflect the internal components (not all). Thus the names of Fabio Pinna, also a municipal councilor, and Gavino Manca, former regional councilor and former deputy were mentioned. In the first phase, the former councilor and municipal councilor Maria Francesca Fantato, deputy regional secretary of the Dem, was considered part of the match. But today the discussion seems, or rather, is limited to Mascia and Ganau, with the former having the advantage because it is more appreciated by the allies.

Two names that refer to the Democratic Party and not to the rest of the coalition. So for a few days now, hypotheses linked to the allies of the Democratic Party have begun to circulate, with great delay compared to the apparently fast times of the other mayoral candidates. First, it was pointed out that men’s names remained. It wouldn’t be a bad thing if a candidate, at least one, were in the mix. And so a possibility would be in the parties to the left of the Democratic Party. But there would also be another alternative, this time an expression of the five-star area. There are no names and this detail has made us think of a simply tactical move to try to speed up the process.

Today (it has been repeated for a couple of days) however, the definitive clarification could arrive and arrive at the much desired synthesis. For the “wide field” it is no longer the time to procrastinate. Elections are around the corner.
