Greek’s tower. The protocol for a “plastic free” city has been signed. The signing of the agreement between the municipal administration led by mayor Luigi Mennella and the head of the Plastic Free voluntary association, Francesco Gallina, arrived yesterday afternoon.

The protocol follows the resolution recently approved by the council, through which the Palazzo Baronale body aims to promote interventions and services aimed at safeguarding and improving environmental conditions and the prudent and rational use of natural resources.

“We are following up on what was said during the electoral campaign and supported when the programmatic lines were approved – states the mayor – when we spoke of ‘Plastic Free Tower’ as one of the main purposes linked to environmental policies. A commitment that we intend to maintain and on which we have already started working, launching specific campaigns and targeted projects. With the signing of this protocol, therefore, we hope to implement this work.”

The provincial representative of the Plastic Free association is also satisfied: “Our objective – underlines Francesco Gallina – is to aim for the city of Torre del Greco to be a candidate among the one hundred plastic free municipalities in Italy. We will work closely with the administration, starting with the mayor Mennella and the councilor Laura Vitiello (present at the signing together with the councilor Anna Fiore), who carried out the preparatory work for the signing of the protocol, in order to promote initiatives that aim at the progressive elimination of the use of plastic”.

The objective of the memorandum of understanding is in fact “to create a direct communication channel between the parties to simplify the bureaucratic steps necessary, on the one hand, for the development of the association and voluntary activities in the area, and on the other for the improvement of the city from an environmental point of view, also preparatory to the path towards recognition as a Plastic Free Municipality”.

Now the association will propose “environmental cleaning appointments in the city area for the removal of plastic and non-hazardous waste from nature; environmental awareness events in schools and universities; geolocalized online awareness in the area through social networks; information and awareness raising through stands; territory protection activities through reports of illegal waste abandonment”.
