The trial of the accused has begun

BRINDISI – He did not appear this morning (Tuesday 16 April 2024) in the Metrangolo courtroom. The 85-year-old Cosimo Calò is the only accused for the double murder of his 70-year-old brother Antonio Calò and the latter’s wife, the 64-year-old Caterina Martucci. The bodies were discovered on March 1, 2023 in their home in the Canali district, not far from the village of Serranova (Carovigno). The trial before the assize court (president: Maurizio Saso; aide: Adriano Zullo) began shortly after 10am, at the Brindisi court. Cosimo Calò, defended by the lawyer Danilo Di Serio, is currently under house arrest. The prosecutor present in the courtroom is Francesco Carluccio, from the local prosecutor’s office. The only civil party to appear: Pasqua Martucci (Caterina’s sister), assisted by the lawyer Francesco Sozzi.

On March 9, 2023, a few days after the murder, the carabinieri of the San Vito Dei Normanni company – led by Captain Vito Sacchi – arrested Cosimo Calò. Antonio Calò had been killed by a rifle shot, two for his wife. The 85-year-old defendant is accused of premeditated murder aggravated by his family relationship with one of the victims and of carrying a common firearm in a public place. The double murder dates back to February 28, 2023. The following day the two bodies were discovered by Carmelo Calò, Cosimo’s brother. The then suspect then made a full confession in front of the San Vito police. Another disturbing detail: he admitted that the morning after the crime, he left his home in the countryside of San Vito Dei Normanni and headed towards the village of Serranova with the intention of killing his brother Carmelo too.

The motive dates back over time: family disagreements, also linked to inheritance issues, which festered over time. During the investigation phase, the carabinieri viewed the images recorded by some cameras in San Vito, near Cosimo Calò’s home. Furthermore, some cartridges were found at the crime scene. They were of the same type as those found in the 85-year-old’s home during the search carried out on March 6. On this occasion, the murder weapon, purchased legally a few days earlier, was seized. Returning to today’s hearing, the prosecutor, the defense and the civil party listed the various elements that will be debated during the trial. After a quick deliberation, they were all welcomed. Finally, Judge Saso announced that the next hearing will be held on May 14th. An expert will be appointed for the transcripts of the wiretaps and some texts will be listened to.
