The 14th edition of Ca’ Foscari Short Film Festival ended with considerable satisfaction for the Experimental Center of Cinematography: the prize Venice ComixW for the best animated short He went to The night Of Martina Generali, Simone Pratola and Francesca Sofia Rosso of the CSC Piedmontwhile the special mention WeShort for the work it offers better experimentation in cinematographic languages it went to We Should All Be Futurists by Angela Norelli, CSC Romea futuristic kaleidoscope made with footage of silent films, texts by Marinetti and music by Tchaikovsky.

The president of the association Dario Ardossi presented the award to The night with the motivation: For the relationship between music and images without the need for a narrative voice and without one of the two prevailing over the other and for the ability to narrate with a few essential elements a story that is partly already known but never banal, mixing tradition and modernity in an innovative way and classic at the same time.

Neither The night there simplicity and authenticity of Pulcinella they are in stark contrast to the more elaborate masks of the guests surrounding him, cryptic and apparently elusive, traits that are also found in the essence of the characters themselves. However, ceramic masks quickly crumble and reveal a void. Everything is sublimated by a synaesthetic, overwhelming and colorful animation, accompanied by the evocative notes of The night by Vivaldi.

The prize a We Should All Be Futurists by Angela Norelli, delivered by the English animator Joanna Quinnwas awarded with the motivation: The compilation film is very ingenious in the way it uses archive footage, and the images selected by the filmmaker are brilliant, creative and political. The entire narrative process and story development intelligently challenges stereotypes about women from the past. There is a sense of irony and paradoxicality in the ingenious ways in which the film presents the female point of view without ever showing a particular woman, but rather by featuring a plurality of women.

Reversing the feminist slogan “we should all be feminists”, the short offers a ironic and playful reversal of the futurist cult of the machine and technological progress, instead putting the rediscovery of the body and female pleasure. It is the voices of the friends Rosa and Giorgina that lead the viewer into an original collage of sequences, taken from the first silent cinema, combined with Tchaikovsky’s waltz and Marinetti’s words, with a hilarious outcome.
