Campo in ferro, Sommariva: “The layout of the western part of the naval base must change. The dialogue with the Navy to have it reclaimed is well underway”

On the future of Iron field there is a open and rather advanced discussion between the Navy and the Port System Authority, who plans to use it for nautical and recreational purposes. The president declared it yesterday Mario Sommariva during the hearing in front of the members of the public works council commission – in which the Via del Molo projects for the redevelopment of the town’s sea front were also discussed – effectively confirming what CDS wrote in recent weeks.
“The Iron Field is an example of an underutilized area not yet returned to civilian uses. Discussions are underway for reuse, obviously with the necessary environmental redevelopment. It is clear to us, but also to the Navy, that whatever is done it is not possible to envisage a road system that extends to Cadimare: if anything, one is needed alternative road system that enters the military area. There are ideas, but not yet the result, which has a slow maturation. But it is necessary to think that if you start working on the Campo in ferro you must also think about it sale of areas which allow for the creation of an alternative road system, which could possibly lighten the one that currently reaches the village of Cadimare”, explained Sommariva in answering the questions posed in the introduction of the debate by the councilor of the mixed majority group, Fabio Cenerinibased on the letter sent by citizens to the Adsp.

“I appreciate the ways in which he responded to the requests of the country’s associations, whom I thank for their ability to ask questions while remaining relevant on the issues. Regarding the Campo in ferro – said the councilor of the Communist Refoundation Massimo Lombardi in his speech – knowing what there is from reading engineer Boeri’s report, I wonder if it isn’t better to talk about quenching and tempering, before any project. Has there been a reflection in this sense with the Navy?”.
“There will be no escape forward and I confirm: reclamation is the right word to use in this case. It’s clear: the area is not ours and a complex and expensive intervention will be necessary, therefore I would like them to hand it over to us already reclaimed. If instead we have to do it alone, let us be given the resources to do it. In the meetings held up to now – stated Sommariva – the Marina said she will take care of it and then he will hand over the area to us. There are environmental, social and civil needs, but today there is clearly a landlord. For our part, we are also willing to collaborate in a trial, but we are told how to do it. We certainly cannot support such an initiative alone.”
The advisor of Avantinsieme Franco Vaira raised the problem of the lack of berths available to residents of La Spezia. “The issue of accessibility of citizens and tourists to the sea and moorings must be taken into account. There are six thousand berths in the Gulfbut only half are available to residents. As a Tellaro native, I find it hard to tolerate the fact that in Lerici there are still buoys and buoys to reach with a battered little boat. And it’s even worse for people from La Spezia: either you have a boat or you don’t go to the sea. Then there is the issue of tourism development, for which mooring and parking availability is needed. There are possibilities to realize infrastructure in the Cadimare bay, arsenal side? I’ve been hearing about it for years, but I haven’t seen any progress yet. And a compatible zone for the parking it would be the Campo in ferro. But I see that gods 350 million euros that the Ministry of Defense has announced to spend on the project Blue basenot even a crumb will be allocated to the Campo in ferro or in any case to the needs of the population”.

“I agree on the importance of the issues of berths and tourism development and I can say that they are very linked to the Campo in ferro and the area you spoke about. However, we need to see how things develop. There is a private individual who would like to build piers in that body of water and who has been suing for 30 years, but loses. The theme is that there is a resolution dating back to 2012 which blocks the possibility of expanding the number of berths until there is a return of the military areas and an overall reorganization of the area. We have to wait, how long I don’t know. If it had been up to me I would have allowed even partial interventions. As mentioned, there is an ongoing process, but if the context does not change you may also consider bringing the 2012 act into Port Management Committee to modify it, also to give substance to the millions that will be spent to redevelop the country”, announced the president of the Port System Authority, who then went into more detail about the general framework.

“I am a pacifist, but it should be noted on Basi blu there is a different climate compared to a year ago. Let’s not forget that Caio Duilio ship was recently involved in war actions in a theater, that of Red Sea, which we can almost consider part of the Mediterranean. The Blue Bases project will need to be continued and to do so it is necessary to change the current layout of the western areas of the naval base. Unfortunately we find ourselves in this international contestI must record that there is optimism that these changes will really take hold: I believe that today talking about Campo in ferro is more relevant than ever. AND not with a cleanup in installments“, Sommariva argued, responding to Cenerini, who shortly before had recalled that as regards the removal of asbestos coverings in the arsenal, we are proceeding with few resources allocated year after year by the ministry. “We need an exceptional allocation – he said – otherwise it will never be finished”.
“We are talking about the restitution of the Campo in ferro not because there is a particular do-goodism, but because the geopolitical moment is completely particular. We stayed stop for 12 years, it would be wrong to continue in this way. We have taken steps with the defense leaders and with the local representatives of the Navy: if things move forward there will be the possibility of doing many things in those 50 thousand square metres, from parking to the storageup to one space for sporting activities… I have trust in dialogue with the Navy and in the perspectives that are opening up”, concluded Sommariva.

From the Democratic Party, the councilor Andrew Montefiori showed satisfaction at the fact that “finally someone is carrying out a negotiation with the Navy”, while on the sidelines of the commission session the private individual cited by President Sommariva made a point of saying that don’t share the reconstruction of the legal events made by the president: “It is not only because of the 2012 ordinance that I have always seen the proposal to create a marina with mobile piers“.
