SYRACUSE, NY — In one year, Syracuse has jumped from No. 93 to No. 77 on Zumper’s list of the top 100 most expensive rental markets in the nation.

Zumper, an online rental marketplace, reports this month marks the end of the slow-moving season as the national rates for both one and two-bedrooms grew every month for the first time in six months.

The report covers 100 cities nationwide, aggregating data from over one million active listings, and includes a National Rent Index for one- and two-bedroom units.

For March 2024, Syracuse ranked as the 77th most expensive rental market in the US with median rents of one- and two-bedroom apartments of $1,040 and $1,330 respectively.

In March 2023, the median monthly rent was $920 and $1,180 for a one- and two-bedroom apartment, up 16.9% and 14.7% from last year respectively.

According to apartmentadvisor.com, Syracuse was ranked the most competitive rental market in the US in February due to an increase in cost of living and population coupled with a shortage of affordable housing.

Rochester was ranked No. 69, Buffalo was ranked No. 65, while New York City remained the most expensive rental market in the country.
