«Your son is in the barracks. He injured a child in an accident, if he doesn’t pay bail he risks prison.” Posing as a representative of a lawyer who was in charge of his son’s case, a 16-year-old managed to get jewelery and credit cards for 50 thousand euros. The boy had arrived in Padua from Naples and was returning there, convinced that he had gotten away with it, when he was stopped by the police on the train near Rome. He still had the entire loot with him.

At the time of the incident, the 84-year-old was alone at home as her husband had been hospitalized for a few days. After having suffered the scam, the woman called 113 and a police officer from the Padua Police Headquarters reached her at her home. The old woman then confided to the police that she had handed over all the precious objects kept in the house to a fake lawyer who showed up on her doorstep after a phone call from a so-called policeman had informed her that her son was being held in the barracks for having caused a car accident and injuring a child. For this reason she would have risked prison if some of her family members had not paid a bail of several thousand euros.

The officers immediately alerted their Flying Squad colleagues, who viewed the images from the railway station cameras and within a few hours managed to identify a young man matching the description provided by the old woman. The latter, shortly after the successful scam, had purchased the ticket for the Padua-Naples route at the self-service ticket office, getting on the first available train. Thanks to the prompt and effective collaboration of colleagues from the Lazio Polfer Department, the Rome Tiburtina Railway Police Subsection and the Judicial Police Team, the young man was stopped once he arrived in Rome. With him he had the entire stolen goods, fully recognized by the victim, including the documents and payment cards of her husband. The young man, 16 years old, already had a history of property crimes.
