Like every year, the Mayor, in compliance with national legislation (Legislative Decree 116/2008) and regional legislation (Managerial Decree of the Tuscany Region no. 6667 of 03/26/2024), issued, on 04/24/2024, Ordinance no. 129 which establishes the ban on bathing in military waters, as well as within port areas.
Also for the 2024 bathing season, i.e. in the period from 1 May to 30 September, bathing is therefore prohibited in the following stretches of the coast:
● Port of Livorno (port area);
● Porticciolo Nazario Sauro (port area);
● Naval Academy (military area);
● Porticciolo di Ardenza (port area);
● Porticciolo di Antignano (port area);
● Quercianella Port (port area);
● Gorgona Island (penitentiary-penal colony);
● Gorgona Island (between Porto and Torre Nuova penal colony) excluding the two bathing areas called “Gorgona Porto” and “Gorgona Torre Nuova” outlined with the Executive Decree of the Tuscany Region n. 6667 mentioned above.
In the municipal ordinance it is specified that within the port area (Port of Livorno) the bodies of water within the port protection works are included, as well as the entrance and exit sector (southern mouth), the area facing the northern mouth of the same and the bodies of water in the harbor used or used as anchoring points and areas for ships.
This type of ban, we remember, is nothing new and is established every year, transmitting the relevant Ordinance to the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of the Environment, the Tuscany Region and other competent bodies.
The Municipalities are responsible for the delimitation, before the start of the bathing season, of the waters not used for bathing and of the permanently prohibited bathing waters within their territory, in compliance with the provisions of the specific regional provision. This is a provision determined by safety measures and has nothing to do with temporary measures banning bathing in the occasional case of pollution.
At the same time, again on 04/24/2024, the Mayor also issued another Ordinance, n.130, which concerns the temporary ban on bathing (relating to the 2024 bathing season) in the body of water located at the mouth of the Rio Felciaio.
The Tuscany Region, this year, again with Decree n. 6667 of 03/26/2024, on the basis of the precautionary principle and consistently with the provisions of the art. 7 paragraph 2 of the Ministerial Decree of 30 March 2010, decided to maintain the temporary ban pending the implementation of the planned rehabilitation interventions.
These are interventions that will be carried out in concert between the Municipality and ASA, for the resolution of the critical issues found in the area and the planning of the necessary measures aimed at eliminating the causes of pollution.
