PORDENONE – The music is over, but nothing can erase its memory. His name was Diego, like the greatest of all. And like him he left suddenlythe other night, after an illness. Diego Sandrin, born in 1963era born in Porcia. Today he lived in San Donà di Piave and was a citizen of the world. A talented singer and guitarist, he loved football, so much so that he is still responsible for the youth sector of Sandonà himself, the club where his two sons play: Dante and Leone. He had played football, and well, when he was at Don Bosco high school. As a striker, but always free to invent and move between the lines like an attacking midfielder. They said he could have a career. At a certain point he had to choose: pentagram or green rectangle. The first one is better.
HARMONIES
In the years of the Great Conspiracy in Pordenone, he had opted for punk, founding his first band, “Ice and the Iced” in 1979, with two other Purlilians: Ronnie on bass and Larry on drums. On an American trip to Baton Rouge he fell in love with the jazz-blues mixture, fusing it in a harmony with a unique style, with his punk revisited in a highly original guise. Back in Italy he founded the Sentemo Records label. Always without “genre” boundaries, of course, including acoustic rock. Then back to America, as a singer-songwriter, with one evening after another in the cult clubs of Los Angeles and California. At one point, Lisa Marie Presley, the Emperor’s daughter, showed up at his concert, pulling it down – literally – from the stage to transform him into one of his authors, for the album “To whom it may concern”in 2003. At the time Diego, forty years old, was living his full artistic maturity, continuing to churn out works for himself and others, as a composer. The last one will be “A fine day between addictions”. After 15 years in the States he returns. Having won the Bilboard with “The songs in the key of madness”, in 2009 he signed (in synergy with Enrico Rava and Glauco Venier) the soundtrack of “Rockstalgia”. It is the 140′ high decibel comedy film by the Barison-Toffanetti duo, distributed by Minerva, on the phenomenon of the musical Pordenone born from the “Conspiracy” and its surroundings.

Diego Sandrin has crossed the eras and recorded a variety of pieces. But inside himself – even after his marriage to Katarina and the arrival of her children – he always remained that genuine and “visionary” boy that Ice was. «Punk – he said – has always been in my heart, in my fibers, in my soul, in my global approach to music». Ice & the Iced were born at the end of 1979 from the ashes of “The Bastards”. On May 3, 1980 they performed as a support group for “Gaznevada” in the Naoni stadium. They had the rehearsal room in the storage room prophetically renamed “The Duke”. In 1981 the independent label Trux Records had proposed to the band to record a work in the Atavf studios, in the basement of an appliance shop. The same location where, shortly before, “HilersS” and “Tampax” had produced their tracks. Mythical times.
PASSION
In recent years the artist had developed a further passion, which coexisted firmly with that of football: a collection of fine spirits, in particular whisky, kept in a safe place near San Donà. Something like 10 thousand bottles, linked to different brands, eras and countries, with pieces of absolute prestige. Exemplars from over a century, strong in workmanship now forgotten, therefore even more precious and refined. Enthusiasts came from China, Holland, Germany, France and Belgium to see it. This too is her legacy.
