With the polls closed, the first projections for the municipal elections have been released: here is who is leading in Perugia, while the counting of votes is underway, which began today at 2 pm.

The polling stations for the 2024 Perugia municipal elections have been closed: the exit polls carried out and broadcast by the Opinio Italia consortium for Rai were published on Sunday evening, and the counting started at 2.00 pm. Perugians and men and women voted for elect the new mayor (or mayor, since the two candidates on the ballot are women) and to elect their representatives in the City Council. We will go to the ballot: the second round is scheduled in all municipalities with more than 15 thousand inhabitants on Sunday 23 June 2024 from 7:00 to 23:00 and Monday 24 June from 7:00 to 15:00.

The first round of the elections ended with, surprisingly, the centre-left candidate Vittoria Ferdinandi (civic candidate supported by a “very broad” field, from Action to the Green-Left Alliance via the Democratic Party and the 5 Star Movement) leading by a handful of votes, at 49%. A little behind Margherita Scocciacandidate of the center-right and councilor of the outgoing mayor’s council Andrea Romizi, which stopped at 48%. The head-to-head will continue in the run-off on 23-24 June.

In addition to them, there were three candidates: Massimo Monni (former regional councilor and candidate from his “Perugia Deserves” list, 1.4%), Davide Baiocco (former captain of Perugia football, 0.76%) e Leonardo Caponi (former senator and candidate with the “PCI – Against war and neoliberalism” list 0.54%).

At the moment the turnout data show a participation of 66%, down compared to the previous electoral round (71%). As mentioned, after the exit polls we will have to wait until 2pm today for the counting to begin, which will lead to the initial projections in the early afternoon: scrutineers and polling station presidents, throughout Italy, will have to give priority to the votes for the European elections and only then will we move on to the municipal votes.
