“Let’s save Vida’s honor and restore dignity to her figure.” The appeal is from Ahmad Bahramzadeh, 28 years old, Iranian and graduating in dentistry in Pisa. The young man was a friend of Vida Shahvalad, the 21-year-old who came from Iran to Italy to enroll at university and died in the night between last Friday and Saturday together with her boyfriend Vincenzo Nocerino, aged 24, after having exhaled the exhaust fumes of the car in which they had secluded themselves inside a garage in Secondigliano. But on March 17, the day after the bodies were found, an Iranian TV news broadcast described Vida as a young woman of “easy virtues”. A description that has hurt the victim’s family, who are still unable to obtain the transfer of the body to their homeland due to the stop imposed by the Iranian moral police. Hence Ahmad’s SOS received by Alfredo, Vincenzo’s father: «she was like a daughter to me. When I found them they were dressed. It is not right that she has been smeared and denigrated by the press in her country. Her family is now experiencing a tragedy within a tragedy, let’s help them.”

THE TRAGEDY

The love story between Vincenzo and Vida ended in the most tragic way on the night of March 16th. The evening before the two boys had returned from a party in Caserta. TO Naples, in I cross Fosso del Lupo, they had decided to go away in a car, a red Panda, at number 161 to find some privacy. They would then turn on the engine to warm up. Among the various possibilities, suicide was initially considered, but it seems to have been a tragic fatality. A gesture, that of keeping the engine running, which would have been taken lightly by the two boys, who would have fallen asleep and never woken up again after breathing in the carbon monoxide fumes.

From minute 21.50, on the Iran International YouTube channel, the presenter of the March 17 news program talks about “a student who died of suffocation in Naples”, together with her boyfriend, adding that the two “were half naked” and that “they were probably about to have intercourse sexually, but due to the carbon monoxide they lost consciousness and then their lives.” An untrue description, according to Vida’s family. «We are talking about a press that is in opposition to the Iranian government – explains Ahmad – the journalist exposed the facts in the wrong way. Without taking into account that in Iran such an image of women is unacceptable.” Vida arrived in Italy in December 2022 to study computer science at Vanvitelli in Caserta. A few months ago she had moved to Naples. The appeal of Ahmad and his father Alfredo was taken up by the deputy Francesco Emilio Borrelli and the Radio Marte speaker Gianni Simioli: «Vincenzo and Vida loved each other. She studied, she was respected and appreciated. It should have been a pride for her country. There the Islamic Republic and the moral police of Tehran have another idea of the role of women in society. Vida was described for what she was not, tarnishing her memory. We ask to stop the leaks of unverified news, which seem only to be the result of gossip which is not at all useful in reconstructing the dynamics of the facts. In Iran there have already been so many problems for Vida’s family that she would just like to dedicate herself to the funeral of her daughter.” Furthermore, Borrelli will ask the Italian Foreign Ministry for support in explaining to the Iranian authorities what really happened.

THE FATHER

Meanwhile, the father of Vincent there is no peace. “I’m now dead inside, but I have to carry on for my son,” says father Alfredo Nocerino, 65, owner of the Partenope pizzeria-trattoria of which he is a partner together with another person. «I have that image before my eyes that I now relive every night – he says – It was more or less 8.30 when I went down to the garage, after realizing that Vincenzo had not returned home. The night before he and Vida had gone to a party with friends in Caserta. I was surprised that he hadn’t warned me. So I raised the garage door and ran near the car that was parked. They were lying down, he in the front seat, she in the back. They were dressed, I want to clarify this because someone said they were naked. They seemed to be sleeping.” Vincenzo tried to wake them up, before realizing that they were dead: «I tried to shake my son and to revive him, I slapped him while screaming his name. But nothing. Absolute silence. Faced with no reaction from either of them, I realized that they were dead and immediately called for help. I went out into the street and I think my screams woke up the whole neighborhood.”
