Personalizing the treatment of heart failure thanks to an algorithm, based on artificial intelligence, capable of integrating clinical data with indications provided by biomarkers. This is the goal of Biotool-Chf, the multicenter international research project coordinated by the Azienda Ospedaliero Universitaria di Bologna – Irccs Policlinico Sant’Orsola and funded by the European Commission Horizon Europe call with a contribution of 9.6 million euros to be divided among all partners. The final aim is to reduce by a third hospitalizations for heart failure, which are currently the leading cause of hospitalization in adults: last year in Emilia-Romagna alone, just under 14 thousand hospitalizations related to this condition were recorded, equal to 10% of the total regional hospitalizations.

“A real turning point” for heart patients

The Emilia-Romagna Region Health Councillor speaks of a “real turning point”, Raffaele Doniniwhich defines Biotool-Chf as “truly innovative and of great strategic value, because thanks to artificial intelligence today we are leading this European project worth almost 10 million euros that will allow citizens suffering from heart failure to have a prediction of what their clinical path will be and reduce hospitalizations by 30%”, significantly reducing costs.

A software will collect patient information

“We will have software available in which we will enter a whole series of clinical and demographic information about the patient in addition to the biochemical information that we will obtain from standard laboratory tests and biomarkers,” he explains. Luciano Potenadirector of the Heart Failure and Transplants operating unit at the IRCCS Policlinico di Sant’Orsola in Bologna. All data that, also thanks to artificial intelligence, “should give us a clearer picture of how the patient actually is – he adds – and how to manage diuretic therapy. As we know, congestion and fluid retention are in fact the main factors that lead patients with heart failure to hospitalization. In association with this software, we will also try to develop an easy-to-use device that can measure some, if not all, of the main biomarkers needed for this software from a drop of blood”, concludes Potena.
