Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer among women. Advances in medical research make the possibility of an effective earlier diagnosis increasingly realistic. Thanks to this, and to progress in therapy, which is increasingly specific for different types of tumors, the mortality rate due to breast cancer is decreasing compared to the past.

Breast cancer: what are the recommended screening tests?

Early diagnosis is essential to intervene promptly on a form of cancer and cure it definitively. There are several screening tests that every woman can undergo.

Breast examination: how is it performed?

The breast examination is a clinical examination of the breast. It begins with a complete medical history of the patient (information on any cases of cancer in the family, hormonal therapies, lifestyle habits, progress of the menstrual cycle and/or menopause) and then continues with the doctor’s palpation of the breast.

This test may not be sufficient for an effective early diagnosis, but a periodic breast examination is strongly recommended every three years for women of childbearing age, and every year for women over 40.

Instrumental tests for the diagnosis of breast cancer

The most reliable instrumental tests for an early diagnosis of breast cancer are:

• mammography with tomosynthesis

• ultrasound

• magnetic resonance imaging

These tests are also recommended every three years during childbearing age and generally annually for women over 40; This monitoring is considered particularly important for women who have a history of breast cancer in the family, especially for hereditary forms (see below).

Mammography is the most effective tool for early diagnosis, but today there are also other very reliable techniques. One of these is the breast Pap test which, thanks to the collection of cells from the milk ducts, is able to identify cells with pre-tumor characteristics.
