The young patient returned from South America where he was probably bitten by a carrier mosquito

Valle d’Aosta records its first case of Dengue fever. The confirmation comes from the Prevention Department of the Local Health Authority. “The patient is a young resident of Aosta, recently returned from a trip to South America, where he was presumably bitten by a mosquito carrying the virus,” the health company said. Upon returning to our region he suffered the typical symptoms of the disease, including high fever and muscle and joint pain. Tests confirmed dengue. «He was not hospitalized nor did he have to follow specific therapy. He is currently well.”

Dengue is a tropical infectious disease caused by the virus of the same name. «It is transmitted by the bites of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes which have, in turn, bitten an infected person», specifies the director of the Health and Hygiene Structure of the Local Health Authority, Salvatore Buongiorno. «It should therefore be noted that Dengue is not a direct transmission disease, from person to person, but contagion occurs only through vector insects, namely mosquitoes of the Aedes genus. In some countries around the world, such as South America, it is endemic and growing, but in most cases the infection presents asymptomatic or as a self-limiting febrile illness.”

The case was reported to the Ministry of Health, as required by the National Arbovirus Prevention and Response Plan, as well as to the Municipality of Aosta, responsible for monitoring and combating actions on the possible presence of mosquitoes.

“There is no specific treatment for Dengue – the Local Health Authority continues -, but correct management of symptoms can help prevent more serious complications”.
