Oscar Awards, are gender neutral categories coming for actors? News in sight

What if actresses like Emma Corrin or Beautiful Ramsey they came nominated for Oscars? In which category would the two stars be placed? A problem that the Academy is also asking itself, and which anticipates a possible big change in the future: the arrival of gender-neutral award categories.

The possibility of this has been discussed for years no longer distinguish between Best Actor and Actress in the most important film awards ceremony of the year, as already happens in various other festivals (such as the Grammys and the Independent Spirit Awards). Similarly to the Best Director category and other technical awards, the intention seems to be to no longer separate between males and females, but to evaluate the general performance of the performers.

This is a solution that not only requires an artistic evaluation of the awards themselves, but also points towards one greater inclusiveness. In recent years, the Academy has already undertaken actions and changes to its regulations to allow various minorities to be better represented and employed in the world of cinema, but is now considering a further change. This was confirmed by Academy president Bill Kramer speaking with Variety.

«We are exploring this topic with our Awards, Membership, Equity and Inclusion Committees – he declared to Variety – and soon with our Council. This is an initial phase of exploration and one of many conversations about the future of awards and the Oscars. We are still studying what that might look like». The novelty is not immediately implementable: in fact, one wonders whether it is not appropriate to introduce percentages to guarantee correct representation, such as 50% of women candidatesbut this measure would defeat the very idea of also allowing a non-binary people to be nominated for an Oscar in a generic category.

Star like Patricia Arquette they spoke out against the prospect, arguing that, on the contrary, it would make women less recognized in the industry. A problem that is not easy to solve, therefore. What do you think? Would you see a Best Performance category for the next Oscars? Tell us yours in the comments.
