“I want to bring menstrual justice to Italy.” With these words Federica Pellegrini, the first female Olympic gold medalist in Italian swimming returned to the podium to give voice, once again, to women and their right to be free. Divina published a post on her Instagram profile where she explained to her followers that she had joined the WeWorld battle, the humanitarian association that guarantees the rights of women and girls.
Federica Pellegrini’s reflection
Federica Pellegrini’s goal is to be able to break down the stigma that still concerns “menstrual poverty” today. «In Italy, as in other countries in the world, there are still many people with menstruation who cannot afford products such as sanitary pads, tampons or cups, do not have clean water or access to suitable places to manage menstruation – underlined Federica Pellegrini on Instagram -. It doesn’t end here: they often don’t receive adequate information about the menstrual cycle, they can’t choose freely about their body and they give up playing sports and social opportunities out of shame or embarrassment due to taboos and stereotypes. All this is menstrual poverty.”
Federica Pellegrini tried to send a significant message to all women urging them to have a sort of female cooperation. «When there is menstrual justice, however, those who menstruate access adequate products and information, experience the menstrual cycle without stigma and embarrassment and have no limits in their social life – concluded Divina -. Starting to talk about menstruation, freely, is a first step towards breaking down stereotypes. Only by uniting our voices and making ourselves heard can we create a movement that produces concrete change.”
