These ‘sons of thunder’ are a Roman group born in 2017 who, after a couple of years of honest apprenticeship – carried out mainly on Italian territory – released their first album entitled “Thunderhood”: a twelve-track based on sound rock and roll of the most classic workmanship, son of forefathers such as AC/DC or Motörhead.
As expected, the flavors are classic rock ones: warm distortions, Lemmy-style scraped vocals, pentatonic-based guitar solos and a beautiful four-quarter drum kit which, let’s face it clearly, never tires.
The themes covered are also in line with the style played and the bands that most inspired Sons Of Thunder: we then move from a very tight and aggressive opening with the song “Thunder Again” which introduces the album with an iconic “Oh yeah!” and then abandon himself in a beautiful alternation of guitar riffs and phrasings that would make the great Angus Young smile.
Also interesting is the piece “We Sold Our Souls”, which brings to the surface sounds close to the world of Ozzy Osbourne, with an intro that recalls the beautiful “Shot In The Dark”, while the singer Joe Thunder narrates his conflictual relationship with the his guitar, accompanied by a nice rocky and pounding bass. The comical, genuine and Romanism I like it explodes in “I Don’t Piss From My Knees” in which Sons Of Thunder underline how the band definitely has something to say despite their (still) short recording career. The title of the piece in fact takes up a way of saying – purely Capitoline – which emphasizes the end of a childhood characterized by not always optimal control of one’s bladder which, if coupled with the short shorts that characterized our childhood, causes precisely the ‘pissing off your knee’ effect.
“Thunderhood” is a frank, simple and direct album that adds nothing to what the legendary bands mentioned above have said; despite this, our debut work is a pleasant and usable product, well played and solid in terms of production: a full-length that is worth listening to, perhaps to give yourself a nice adrenaline rush during a workout in the gym, in the hope that the band will develop a more personal physiological sound signature and distance itself from the famous names that have heavily influenced it.
