The most powerful truck in Europe not only does it offer performance and driving comfort, but it is also environmentally friendly with reduced fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. Let’s talk about Volvo FH16, the new iconic heavy vehicle from the Swedish company which, thanks to the D17 engine, offers even greater fuel savings, especially when combined with the aerodynamic cabin of the truck.

The most powerful truck in Europe is Volvo

Volvo’s brand new D17 engine, fitted to the iconic Volvo FH16, has been designed for the most demanding transport tasks and to offer exceptional performance and durability. Compared to its predecessor, the new truck adds 7% torque and reduces fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by 5%. This is a 780 HP model which is an example of Volvo Trucks’ continuous commitment to putting high-performance trucks on the road and capable of reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions thanks to existing transmission technologies and in parallel with the introduction of new technologies.

A vehicle which, thanks to Volvo’s new 17-litre Euro 6 engine, is available in three power levels: 600 HP, 700 HP and 780 HP. With torque levels having been increased to 3000Nm, 3400Nm and 3800Nm on the top version, the gearbox has been updated to handle up to 3800Nm and the efficiency of the internal gearbox has been further improved on the 3000Nm and 3400 Nm.

The new engine is also available in the new Volvo FH16 Aero, which offers even greater fuel savings when combined with the truck’s aerodynamic cab. A D17 that is certified to run on HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) in all power ratings, with the 700hp version also certified to run on 100% biodiesel (B100).

FH16, efficiency and productivity

Both versions, Volvo FH16 and FH16 Aero with the brand new D17 engine, will available to order from mid-2024 and production will begin in the second half of 2024. Vehicles which, as underlined by Volvo Trucks Product Management and Quality Manager Jan Hjelmgren, are a perfect mix of efficiency and productivity.

Our engineers have created an engine that combines the highest torque and horsepower of any European truck with superior fuel efficiency. The facts are clear: more torque and power with significant fuel and CO2 savings is a fantastic result. This means that our customers can carry out their tasks more efficiently and with greater productivity” has explained.

And speaking of sustainability, Marcos Weingaertner, Volvo Product Manager, underlined that the fuel efficiency of the D17 engine and the possibility of fueling with HVO and B100 will satisfy customers who want to achieve a low environmental impact of operations: “HVO and B100 biodiesel are renewable fuels that can be obtained from completely renewable resources such as vegetable oils or food waste. Using HVO or B100 significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions“.

Customers who choose this engine will notice a tangible difference when they drive the vehicle. This engine can significantly improve the performance and profitability of transport activities and simultaneously reduce CO2 emissions” Weingaertner’s words.
