Genoa. On Wednesday 26 June at 5.30 pm at the Circolo PD of Sestri Ponente, in via Paglia 15R, the journalist Giovanni Mari will present his new book “Assault on the factory. Genoa 1944, the fascists transform the workers into Hitler’s slaves”, published by People, in a meeting promoted by the Diesse Foundation. The volume tells the story of the deportation of 1500 Genoese workers ordered by the fascists on 16 June 1944 to provide manpower for the Nazi war industry. Locked up in Mauthausen, they suffered from hunger and freezing temperatures.

A true story, as we read in a note at the opening of the book: “Every single fact in this story is true, attributable exactly to the people mentioned and happened in the ways and places expressly indicated.” Mari retraces these facts eighty years later, recounting the deportation for political reasons of over 23 thousand Italian men and women and more than 100 thousand workers and demonstrating the complicity of the fascists in the construction of the machine of Nazi oppression.

Speakers will include Andrea Viari, president of the local section of the National Association of Partisans of Italy, Mario Margini of the Diesse Foundation, Roberta Terrari, vice president of Coop Liguria, Ivano Bosco of SPI CGIL, Simone D’Angelo, provincial secretary of the Democratic Party. Ezio Bellentani, coordinator of Municipality VI, will moderate. The children and grandchildren of those who lived through those terrible days will bear their testimonies.
