Ukraine, history and identity of a nation: Simone Bellezza’s book at the Foundation

Always keeping attention on the conflict in Ukraine but also on the history and identity of the nation and its population is the constant objective of Lyudmyla Popovych, president of “Nadiya”, a voluntary organization that is a point of reference for the Ukrainian community in Piacenza . With this in mind, on Thursday 13 June – at the Auditorium of the foundation in Piacenza and Vigevano at 6.30 pm – the presentation of the book published by Laterza “Ukrainian Identity” is scheduled. The author, Simone Attilio Bellezza, professor of Contemporary History at the Department of Humanistic Studies of the University of Eastern Piedmont, will present it by reconstructing the movement from 1800 to today. Ukraine has long been a contested territory between powerful and competing empires. Yet, starting from the nineteenth century, a national consciousness developed which, after 1989, gave meaning and identity to the new independent state. Tracing the history of the birth of a nation, this book offers a key to understanding the most recent events and the current conflict with Russia.

“I would like to thank – says Popovych – the historic Professor Bellezza, the Piacenza and Vigevano Foundation which hosts us for initiatives like this thanks to the collaboration of Maria Grazia Sabato, also as a Rotary Club as well as as a Foundation councilor, who from is always sensitive to the situation in Ukraine and supports us on every occasion, Eleonora Bagarotti for her help and all the insights in preparing the event, the volunteers of my association and the Ippogrifo Cooperative for recently organizing a charity dinner where I 1,550 euros were raised which will support the “Let’s save lives together” project for the purchase of medicines for the wounded in Kharkiv. The most special and important thanks goes to all the institutions and all the people of Piacenza, who continue to support and help the Collection Center for Ukraine in Via Colombo: they warm our hearts and allow us to resolve the most dramatic situations, especially in our tormented Ukraine ”.
