Fan in Denis Villeneuve gather together: it’s time to mark your next movie date on your calendar.
Warner Bros. e Legendary they announced that the beloved director will return to the theaters on December 18, 2026 with a still untitled project, which for the moment is only defined “An event film of Denis Villeneuve”. Obviously, the thought of all the spectators is only one: Dune 3or better to say Dune Messiah.
In fact, according to some sources, the two studios have set the date in the hope that by then the conclusion of the sci-fi trilogy will finally be completed. But the work has not yet begun: the script is still being written, and casting for the new actors is nowhere near.
It’s not even a given that this will be Villeneuve’s next film; after all, the director has stated several times that wanting to take a break from the story of Paul Atreides. During an interview with Empire Magazine had stated: «I shot the first and second one after the other, it made sense to me. But it meant that for six years I was always on Arrakis and I think it’s healthy to take a step back a bit».
The project he could devote himself to in the meantime is an adaptation of Nuclear War: A Scenarioa non-fiction book written by the Pulitzer winner Annie Jacobsenwhich the director will once again make for Legendary. The book explores the possible consequences of the eventuality of a nuclear war (specifically a North Korean attack on Washington), based on interviews with experts in civil and military history.
The fact that the 2026 release is however defined as a “event film” it certainly bodes well for fans of Dune…What do you think, will the third chapter be Denis Villeneuve’s next film?
