Happiness Project, launched by Giuseppe Bertuccio D’Angelo, shows us the situation of the rivers in Bangladesh, where waters and fish are suffocated by fast fashion

In the heart of Dhakain Bangladesh, one of the tributaries of the Buriganga River has turned into ariver of clothes”, suffocated by waste from the textile industries. What were once crystal clear waters is now one toxic slime which destroys local flora and fauna, forcing residents to live with serious health problems.

This environmental disaster is the result of fast fashionan industry that favors rapid and low-cost production of clothes. This is the true cost of our fashion on the environment and for this reason we must change our consumption habits to hope to live in a healthier and more sustainable world.

The video was shocking published by Progetto Happiness on Instagram and shows this environmental disaster that has driven the proliferation of factories in countries like Bangladesh, where environmental regulations are often inadequate and poorly enforced. A video that confirms what has already been shown by another creator, @davud and which we have already told you about in recent months.

Only 30% of waste is disposed of correctly

But how is all this possible? Every day, Dhaka discharges around 4,500 tonnes of solid waste, of which only 30% is disposed of correctly, making the water unfit for humans and animals. Fast fashion has been causing damage for decades without consumers being fully aware of it.

The damages they registered from multiple fronts: Energy consumption, microfiber dispersal, and harmful chemicals in wastewater are all threats to humans and wildlife. Furthermore, pollution from fabrics and plastic increases the risk of serious flooding. The clothing industry, in terms of CO2 emissions, exceeds the pollution of the aviation and shipping industries combined.

73% of clothing imported by the United States in 2023 comes from Asia, with China, Vietnam and Bangladesh leading the way. Of Bangladesh’s $52 billion in exports in 2021, $44 billion was garments, with our greed destroying the planet.
