Rafah, Israel at an “important crossroads”: there is the hypothesis of moving the front

When, more than a month ago, the Israeli army began operations in the southern Gaza Strip, Rafah seemed the only area that was at least partially safe. The military offensive by Tel Aviv forces in the area, however, demonstrated the opposite. The operation launched at the beginning of last May against the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas should end within two weeks. This is what Israeli security officials quoted by the broadcaster “Kan” said, according to which we have reached an “important crossroads”. In case of failure to reach an agreement on the ceasefire in the negotiations, according to the same sources, the “political level” of the Jewish State will be called upon to decide on the next steps to take, and above all to establish whether to maintain the main fighting front in the Gaza Strip or move it to Lebanon.

In any case, the officials quoted by “Kan” underlined that Israeli forces will maintain control of the so-called Philadelphia Corridor, a 14 kilometer long strip of land on the border between Gaza and Egypt, near the city of Rafah, and the Corridor Netzarim, in the central part of the Strip. According to what a senior political official told the broadcaster, “no new mechanism will want to establish itself in the Gaza Strip until Hamas is eliminated.” The theme of the war in the Middle East also ended up at the center of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s final speech at the G7.

Israel seems to have fallen into a trap set by Hamas, whose strategy to emerge from isolation “is working”, declared the Prime Minister in the final press conference of the summit in Borgo Egnazia, Puglia. The owner of Palazzo Chigi recalled that “it was not Israel” that started the conflict in the Gaza Strip and underlined how it is necessary to “work for peace”. “This is what we are doing. We must dialogue and recognize Israel’s right to live in security and Palestine’s right to live in its own state peacefully. It is the only way to address this problem: to work with everyone”, he added Melons.
