Earth has suffered a global catastrophic event, human life has been wiped out and only a few species remain. This is a hypothetical scenario of course, but which animals – according to science – would have the best chance of survival? Here are our top five contenders.
In first place could only be the tardigrade. According to National Geographic, they are the “most indestructible animals on Earth.” Tardigrades can survive in extreme environments, from deserts to high altitudes, and even freezing temperatures. Their resistance is due to a protein called Dsup, which protects their genetic material like a shield against dangerous particles, allowing them to resist radiation levels lethal to most other living things.
Second place is occupied by the modest cockroach, which has already proven its resilience by surviving the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs. Cockroaches can squeeze through tiny cracks for protection and have an extremely varied diet, eating just about anything. Additionally, they are incredibly resistant to poisons, making them particularly difficult to eliminate.
Some animals even might thrive in conditions of global disaster, like vultures. These birds could benefit from a zombie apocalypse thanks to their ability to digest harmful bacteria and rotting meat. Their highly acidic stomachs make them capable of consuming even the most infected carrion without problems.
In the marine world, sharks, especially Greenland sharks, are among the longest-lived, with some individuals living over 400 years. They have already survived world wars and nuclear tests. With over 500 shark species, it’s likely that at least one could survive a global disaster.
Including larger animals is difficult, but emperor penguins are an exception. These can survive extreme temperatures and violent winds of Antarctica. They can even live without eating for weeks thanks to their fat reserves. By inhabiting remote areas, they could avoid disease and other dangers simply because of their geographic location.
