Gorgonzola: presentation of the book at the “Niccolitudini”

Presentation on Friday 28 June at 6pm at the Niccolini Theatre

Gorgonzola was appreciated by celebrities such as Giosuè Carducci, James Joyce, Alberto Moravia. Legend even has it that Winston Churchill recommended to RAF pilots to spare the companies producing the much-loved cheese from bombs. The book by Maria Cristina Ricci and Claudio Maria Tartari, entitled Il gorgonzola, gives an account of this vast “mythography”. A cheese of inspiration (ed. Pagliai), which will be presented on Friday 28 June at 6.00 pm at the Teatro Niccolini (Via Ricasoli, 3) in the presence of the authors.
The publication collects around fifty quotes found in narrative texts, letters and novels between the eighteenth and twenty-first centuries, from which the evocative power of this unmistakable cheese appears. Classical writers such as Stendhal, Manzoni and Gadda, Nobel Prize winners and numerous contemporary crime writers are equally divided between unconditional admirers and ferocious detractors: gorgonzola does not allow half measures! The book continues with a historical overview which underlines the interaction between the morphological characteristics of Po Valley agriculture and dairy production, a synergy which then resulted in the invention of this delicious typical product.
