In Austria the far right advances for the first time. Government parties collapse

Also in Austria the right advances. According to the first exit polls, released by the public broadcaster ORF, the first party is the Freedom Party (FPÖ), with around 27 percent of the votes. The far-right party is clearly the winner of the European elections.

The center-right People’s Party, which leads the government, is in second place with 23.5 percent, followed by the opposition Social Democrats, a few decimals behind with 23.5 percent. The Greens, the junior partner in the majority coalition, are in third place, tied with the Neos liberals on 11 percent.

For the FPö it is about a historic result: the party is the first political formation in the country for the first time, five years ago it stopped at 17 percent. Support for the far-right party had collapsed after the “Ibizagate” scandal, which engulfed it in 2019, when its former leader was caught on tape promising government contracts to a woman posing as the granddaughter of a Russian oligarch. In the European Parliament the FPÖ is registered with the Identity and Democracy group.

The Popolari are collapsing (in 2019 they reached 34.5 percent) and the Greenswhich lost more than three points (14 percent in 2019). The Social Democrats, on the other hand, are holding on: five years ago they obtained 23.9 percent. Results that reflect the latest polls published during the week. And which outline a scenario in view of the political elections scheduled for the autumn.
